Good aftercare decides how a tattoo or piercing looks and heals years from now. Tattoos: keep it clean, apply a thin layer of ointment two to three times a day, never pick the flakes, and no soaking for two to three weeks. Piercings: sterile saline twice a day, hands off, no twisting, no pools, and a free downsize check once swelling drops. Below are the full routines, the healing timeline for every placement, and when to call the studio.

Leave the covering on for as long as your artist told you, usually two to six hours. Wash your hands, remove it, clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, pat dry with a clean paper towel, then apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment.
Wash two to three times a day, pat dry, apply a thin layer of ointment. Tender and tight is normal. Plasma and excess ink may weep. Do not soak it.
Flaking and itching begin. Switch to a light fragrance-free lotion and keep moisturizing. Do not pick, scratch or peel — that is how ink is lost.
Surface healing finishes around two to three weeks. No pools, hot tubs, baths or ocean for the full two to three weeks. Sunscreen only once the skin has closed completely.
Sun exposure is what fades tattoos. Sunscreen on exposed tattoos every day is the single most effective thing you can do to keep line weight and color intact.
