Why do black and grey tattoos last longer?

Black pigment is the most stable ink used in tattooing. A black and grey piece built with strong contrast holds its structure as skin settles, which is why it is the safest choice for a tattoo you want to keep for decades.

Is black and grey cheaper than color?

Not necessarily. Price depends on size, detail and session time, not the style. The shop minimum is $80 and most small-to-medium pieces run $80 to $400.

Can you do a black and grey portrait?

Yes, and it is one of the strongest uses of the style. Joseph works in black and grey realism and portraits, and Gio works in black and grey fine detail.

Black and Grey Tattoos in Riverside, CA

A black and grey tattoo uses black ink only, diluted into washes and built up in layers to create dimension, depth and drama. At Arcane Ink in Riverside, black and grey work is drawn with deliberate contrast: real darks, clean mid-tones and open skin for highlights. It suits realism, Chicano work, portraits, horror, and any piece that should look timeless rather than trendy, and it is the style most likely to still look strong after ten years.

Realism and portrait work
Chicano style, script and spiritual imagery
Horror, gothic and dark atmospheric pieces
Florals and ornamental detail
Large-scale sleeve and back pieces

Built to last

How it ages

Black and grey ages better than any other style because black pigment is the most stable. The pieces that fail are the ones built too soft. We keep dark structure strong and use open skin as highlight instead of relying on light washes that fade.

Every piece at Arcane Ink is planned for how it will look in ten years. See how we plan for longevity.
